There is plenty of sea angling sport to be had with pollack and mackerel around the mouth of the harbour. Deep sea anglers will probably target the really big fish that are found a little farther offshore. Sharks, skate and the other large fish that haunt the many reefs and wrecks are the quarry. The Stags and the Fastnet Rock are two of the best-known local marks. There are a number of licensed sea angling charter boats operating from the village. The shelter provided by the islands makes Baltimore also a good venue for smaller boats, which can be launched easily from the slipways. Alternatively, boats suitable for inshore fishing can be hired locally. For shore angling there are a number of local rock marks, while the famous bass beaches of West Cork are only a short distance away. If you want freshwater fishing, the Ilen river above Skibbereen is good for sea trout and the odd salmon. Shepperton (Shreelane) Lake, a very picturesque stocked fishery by the Cork road, holds a good head of rainbow trout and some awesome pike. There are boats available for hire at the lakeside.
