Nearly 70 anglers from various different countries took part in the 2010 Baltimore Deep Sea Angling Festival, making it one of the most successful yet. The event was also notable for some great individual achievements. The weather was fine on all four days, though a combination of wind against tide made fishing tricky some of the time. Nonetheless plenty of fish was caught (and, in the case of non-edible species, returned) with ling and conger eel figuring prominently as usual. Proving that piracy does pay (sometimes), the overall winner was Co Cork angler Bill Davidson, in spite of (or perhaps because of) appearing on the pier one day dressed as a pirate! The Lupa Cup for second spot was taken by Dutch angler Jessica Teeling – the best result yet for a female angler in the festival. Jessica also won the Ladies’ Cup, the Pete Smith Shield for best fish, and her team – consisting of herself, English angler Martin Glennie, and fellow Dutch angler Pjotr van Mourik – scooped the team cup, capping a highly successful weekend for the Netherlands and Jessica, in particular. Winner of the O’Brien Tray for third place overall was Wicklow angler Peter Cox who has now managed a top-three finish in three of the past four years, another notable achievement. Herbie Dennis, another ‘veteran’ of the angling festival, won the Lilian Rose Bowl for best edible fish and, for the second year running, the Ted Browne Cup for best skipper was won by Jim Nowotynski of Rod ’n Reel. As usual, the three days of ground fishing were preceded by a one-day shark fishing competition which was held in near ideal conditions, in spite of rather pessimistic weather forecasts in the days leading up to it. A number of blue shark were caught, tagged and released and the winner of the Baltimore Sea Angling Festival Cup for best shark was won by English angler John Clare. The festival was generously supported by local businesses and individuals, including Mainport Holdings Ltd of Cork and other sponsors and prize-donors too numerous to mention here. A full list of sponsors can be found on the festival website www.baltimoreseaangling.com, along with results and other festival details. Next year’s festival, pirates permitting, will take place on 25–28 August 2011.
