Gardens

Cherry blossom and tulips, Inish BegThe mild oceanic climate of West Cork is great for gardening. Tender plants – in particular, flowering shrubs like Camellia, Abutilon and Crinodendron – feature prominently in gardens, large and small. Many keen gardeners have come to live around Baltimore down the years and the fruits of their skill and dedication are there for all to enjoy, often against a spectacular backdrop of mountains, rivers or the sea. A most famous example is the great Italian garden on Garnish island. However, there are other exciting gardens near to hand, from tiny cottage gardens to large demesnes with woodland walks and specimen trees.

Many gardens in the area are open to the public – some throughout the season, others at particular times such as during the Baltimore Secret Gardens weekend or the week-long West Cork Garden Trail. There are also courses and events for those who wish to develop their own gardening skills.
