Walking

West Cork is great walking country with its mix of bare mountainsides, wooded valleys, country lanes and rugged coastline. The scenery is magnificent and seasoned with sites of historic interest. There are designated walks around Baltimore itself and on the islands, too. Nearby Lough Hyne Hill, or Knockomagh, is a bit more challenging as the path winds its way up through the remnants of ancient woodland, but the panorama of West Cork from the top is outstanding.

For local walks in Baltimore pick up a brochure which has the following local routes marked: Coney Island, Tranadroum & the Beacon, Hill Loop, Bull Point and the Ringfort and Church Strand or Trafraska via Laherne (all approx 1 hour walks from the Square). Slightly out of the village is Spain village.

There are maps and guides available with suggested routes and detailing points of interest, while specialist operators offer guided walking tours in the area. You can also join one of the organised walking events that take place every year in conjunction with the Skibbereen Chamber of Commerce & Skibbereen Walking Club.
